About
The Zero Malaria Experience is an immersive and interactive installation which uses new research to tell the story of how a ‘toolbox’ of scientific innovations has helped to reduce malaria over the past 60 years. It illustrates the potential of existing interventions, like insecticide treated bed-nets and vaccines, alongside future ones, like gene-drive technologies and next-generation vaccines, to save millions more lives in years to come.
Alongside the experience, Malaria No More UK released a film featuring Zero Malaria ambassador David Beckham engaging with the one-of-a-kind interactive, immersive data-driven artwork, which was launched on huge 360-degree screens - made possible by London’s Outernet and the brilliant creative teams at The Mill. Special guests included UK Government representatives, malaria-endemic country leaders, Global Fund young changemakers, leading malaria scientists and others leading the charge in finding new and innovative tools to help end malaria in our lifetime.
I worked with Marcel Wang under the direction of Will Macneil to create the real-time visuals made entirely in touchDesigner and an Unity application to control the visuals at Outernet.
development
We worked closely with Imperial College to get the history and projected data of malaria in the world. Then I developed a batch scripts in Global Mapper to process those data into a more TD friendly format for visualization. For the particle movments, we toke a more traditional GPGPU approches using textures, instead of compute buffer. Specific logics were added to ensure particle movements align with the data instensity. Visual blocks, data interfaces and interactive modules were connected through customized python script in TD.
